Free-scoring Semenyo eases the pressure on Haaland

Manchester City FC have often been criticised for depending too much on Erling Haaland for goals this season — but that may be changing.

January signing Antoine Semenyo scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Leeds United FC at Elland Road, moving City to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal FC.

Since joining from AFC Bournemouth for £62.5m, Semenyo has netted six times in 11 appearances. He is now City’s top scorer this calendar year, helping to ease the pressure on the injured Haaland.

City’s form has improved alongside Semenyo’s arrival. They have won four league matches in a row and lost just once in their past seven, piling pressure on Arsenal ahead of a crucial meeting between the two sides in April.

Semenyo said the team are focused only on winning their own games and letting the title race take care of itself.

After the match, manager Pep Guardiola walked onto the pitch and blew kisses toward his family in the stands — a gesture that may also have been aimed at Leeds supporters who had been taunting him during the game.
