Deontay Wilder has sent a message of support to Anthony Joshua, saying the British heavyweight is in his “prayers” after two of Joshua’s close friends died in a car crash in Nigeria in December. Joshua suffered minor injuries in the accident, which happened near Lagos and involved a collision with a stationary truck.
Wilder said that despite their long rivalry, boxers are like family and urged Joshua to stay strong during such a difficult time. He added that the tragedy brought back painful memories of losing his own cousin in a road accident.
The two former world champions never fought each other, despite plans for an undisputed title bout in 2018 falling through. Wilder, who faces Derek Chisora in London on 4 April, also spoke openly about his own mental health struggles and said he feels renewed and ready as he prepares for his 50th professional fight.
