South Africa beat Afghanistan in one of the most dramatic matches in T20 World Cup history, winning after two super overs in Ahmedabad.
The game was tied after 40 overs and even the first super over could not separate the teams. In the second super over, David Miller smashed 16 off four balls to help the Proteas set 23 runs. Afghanistan fell four runs short despite a strong effort.
Earlier, South Africa posted 187-6 thanks to half-centuries from Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton. Afghanistan responded with Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s brilliant 84 off 42 balls and useful knocks from Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan.
With 13 needed off the final over, Afghanistan forced a tie after a dramatic run-out, sending the match into a super over. After the first one ended level at 17 runs each, South Africa held their nerve in the second, with Keshav Maharaj taking two key wickets to seal victory.
The win gives the Proteas back-to-back victories, while Afghanistan’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage are now very slim.
