Arsenal ended Manchester City’s 13-game winning run in the Women’s Super League with a 1-0 win that boosted their push for a top-three finish.
Olivia Smith scored early to hand City their first WSL defeat since the opening day of the season and stop them from stretching their lead at the top of the table. Arsenal looked confident after their recent Fifa Champions Cup success and controlled much of the game.
Smith scored in the 17th minute, racing onto a through ball, beating the defender, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing into an empty net. Arsenal continued to trouble City with Smith’s pace, while goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita made a key save to deny Alessia Russo before half-time.
City improved after the break but had a goal ruled out for a foul, and missed chances proved costly. Despite the loss, City remain top of the table, while Arsenal stay in the race for the top three with a game in hand.
