Steve Smith has been added to Australia’s T20 World Cup squad ahead of their must-win game against Sri Lanka. He had travelled as backup after captain Mitchell Marsh suffered a groin injury, and has now officially replaced injured bowler Josh Hazlewood.
Smith hasn’t played a T20 international since February 2024, but he was in good form in the Big Bash earlier this year. Australia’s batting has struggled in the tournament, including a shock loss to Zimbabwe.
If Australia lose to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe beat Ireland, they will be knocked out. They may need to win their remaining matches and hope their net run-rate is good enough to reach the Super 8s.
