Scotland started their T20 World Cup campaign with a 35-run loss to West Indies, as Shimron Hetmyer’s quick half-century and Romario Shepherd’s five-wicket haul proved too strong.
Scotland, who joined the tournament late after Bangladesh’s withdrawal, competed well at times but could not match the two-time champions’ quality. Chasing 183, they slipped to 37-3 early before captain Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce added 78 runs to give brief hope. Berrington scored 42 off 24 balls, but once he was out, the chase fell away.
Shepherd sealed the win for West Indies with a stunning hat-trick on his way to figures of 5-20. Earlier, West Indies posted 182-5, driven by Hetmyer’s rapid 64 and support from Rovman Powell. Despite some disciplined bowling from Scotland, including Brad Currie’s 2-23, the target was ultimately beyond their reach.
