Kasper Schmeichel was under heavy scrutiny after Celtic’s 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart in their Europa League play-off.
The veteran goalkeeper was criticised for Stuttgart’s first and third goals, with pundits suggesting teams may now target his left-hand side. The home crowd at Parkhead showed their frustration, with some ironic cheers after one of his saves.
Former manager Neil Lennon said the reaction was “bitterly disappointing”, while interim boss Martin O’Neill insisted the defeat was a team failure, not just Schmeichel’s fault. Captain Callum McGregor also backed the goalkeeper, saying everyone makes mistakes and that Schmeichel has made many important saves for the club.
Celtic now face a tough second leg in Germany after a damaging night at home.
