Mexican Open denies cancellation despite violence concerns

0

Organisers of the Mexican Open say the tournament will go ahead despite violence following the death of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”

Clashes broke out in Jalisco after his capture and death, with members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG)setting fires and blocking roads. The US government has warned citizens to shelter in several states.

However, the tournament in Acapulco, in Guerrero, will continue as planned. Organisers said reports of cancellation are false and that they are working closely with security authorities.

British players Cameron Norrie, Katie Boulter, and Heather Watson are due to compete in events in Mexico this week.
