Liverpool are in talks to sign Sunderland loanee Geertruida

Liverpool are in talks to sign Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida on loan from RB Leipzig, with the player currently spending the season at Sunderland.

The 25-year-old previously worked with Liverpool manager Arne Slot at Feyenoord and is one of several defensive options the club is considering. Geertruida is a Dutch international and can play at right-back, centre-back, or in defensive midfield.

Liverpool are looking at defensive cover because Conor Bradley is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined for a few weeks with a groin problem, and Ibrahima Konate’s contract expires this summer.

Any deal is complicated as it involves three clubs. Geertruida’s loan at Sunderland does not include a recall clause, so any move would need Sunderland’s approval. The Championship club are expected to ask for compensation, having paid around £2m to bring him in on loan.
