Kane Williamson returns for New Zealand in World Cup qualifiers

Leah Williamson is back in the England women's national football team squad for the first time since Euro 2025 as they begin their 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 28-year-old Arsenal Women defender missed recent friendlies against China, Ghana and Australia, as well as the defeat to Brazil, because of a knee injury. She had surgery after helping England win their second straight European title in July and returned to club action in December.

Manager Sarina Wiegman said it is “really nice” to have Williamson back, although she is still building up her fitness. Wiegman added that some players will need careful management, with a 25-player squad giving room for adjustments.

Several key players also return, including Lauren James, Alex Greenwood and Hannah Hampton. James is back after four months out with an ankle injury, Greenwood recovered from a knee problem, and Hampton has overcome a thigh issue.

There is a first senior call-up for Poppy Pattinson, while Freya Godfrey keeps her place. Ellie Roebuck returns after gaining minutes with Aston Villa Women, while Khiara Keating drops out and will join the under-23s.

England are without Ella Toone, who is sidelined with a hip injury, and Anouk Denton is also not included. Gotham FC defender Jess Carter is back after time off following the NWSL play-offs.

The Lionesses face Ukraine in Turkey on 3 March before hosting Iceland at the City Ground on 7 March. They will also meet reigning world champions Spain women's national football team later in qualifying.

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will be held in Brazil from 24 June to 25 July, and Wiegman says she is excited as the team officially begins its road to the tournament.
