Former England head coach Eddie Jones says the atmosphere during England’s defeat to Ireland national rugby union team reminded him of how his own time in charge ended.
England’s Six Nations title hopes have taken a major hit after heavy defeats to Ireland and Scotland. Some fans left Allianz Stadium early during the Ireland match, and fly-half George Ford was sarcastically cheered after earlier mistakes. Jones said the mood in the stadium felt gloomy and tense, similar to when England lost to South Africa national rugby union team in 2022 shortly before he was sacked by the Rugby Football Union.
Jones also suggested current coach Steve Borthwick made a mistake by talking about a possible title decider against France before the tournament. He believes looking too far ahead can distract players and affect their mindset.
He added that England’s recent drop in form may be due to issues with focus and emotional control, and questioned whether Henry Pollock is better used as an impact substitute rather than starting matches.
