England Bench Itoje and start Northampton Centres

England will start their Six Nations campaign without Maro Itoje on the pitch for the first time in nearly seven years, after the captain was named on the bench for Saturday’s opening match against Wales.

Itoje missed part of England’s build-up to the tournament as he travelled to Nigeria for his mother’s funeral. The 31-year-old admitted it has been a difficult period both personally and professionally. Despite being a regular starter in every Six Nations match since 2020, England have decided it is best for him to begin this game on the bench.

Jamie George will captain the team from the start, with Itoje expected to take over leadership duties when he comes on. Coach Steve Borthwick said the decision was made with Itoje’s wellbeing in mind and believes he will still have a big impact when introduced.

Borthwick also praised the strong bond within the squad, saying players now care more about each other as people, not just teammates. He added that the squad will fully support Itoje during this time.

Elsewhere in the team, Northampton players Fraser Dingwall and Tommy Freeman have been chosen to start in midfield. Freeman will continue playing at centre rather than on the wing, while Dingwall beat competition from other contenders for his place.

England will hope the strong understanding between the Northampton players carries over into the international match as they begin their Six Nations campaign.
