Anthony Gordon scored four goals as Newcastle United thrashed Qarabag to take firm control of their Champions League last-16 play-off tie.
Newcastle raced into an early lead, with Gordon scoring after just two minutes. He later added two penalties and capitalised on a defensive mistake to complete his hat-trick before half-time — eventually making it four on the night.
The emphatic win at the Tofig Bahramov Republican Stadium marked Newcastle’s biggest ever victory in the competition. Gordon also broke Alan Shearer’s record to become the club’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League.
Qarabag pulled one back through Elvin Cafarquliyev, but substitute Jacob Murphy restored Newcastle’s five-goal cushion ahead of the second leg at St James’ Park.
