Iga Swiatek began her push to make history at the Australian Open with an unconvincing first-round win. The world number two, who is chasing the only Grand Slam title missing from her career, struggled at times against Chinese qualifier Yuan Yue but still managed to get through in straight sets.
Swiatek made a lot of mistakes and had problems with her serve, especially her second serve, allowing Yuan to stay competitive. Despite this, she showed her experience to win 7-6 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena, admitting afterwards that her performance was far from perfect.
While other top players cruised through their opening matches, Swiatek said she knows she needs to improve before the next round. She will face Marie Bouzkova next and hopes to sharpen her game as she continues her bid to complete the career Grand Slam.
