Rooney says Carrick is the best pick for now

Wayne Rooney says Michael Carrick is the "right choice for now" as Manchester United’s caretaker head coach to help "steady the ship." Carrick will take charge until the end of the season, replacing Ruben Amorim.

Rooney, who played alongside Carrick in 366 games at Old Trafford and won five Premier League titles with him, said it was the obvious pick given the lack of top managers currently available. "It is a difficult task," he added, "Manchester United are not in a good place, and Michael has to go in and steady the ship."

Carrick’s short-term role leaves questions over who the club will choose in the summer. Names already suggested include Xabi Alonso, who recently left Real Madrid, and Thomas Tuchel, currently England manager. Rooney thinks Tuchel is a strong option, noting his Premier League experience and trophy-winning record.
