Martin O’Neill has returned to Celtic as manager for the rest of the season after Wilfried Nancy was sacked. The 73-year-old had already taken charge for eight games after Brendan Rodgers left in October, winning seven, before stepping aside for Nancy in December.
Nancy’s spell did not go well, with only two wins from eight matches, including a League Cup final loss to St Mirren, which led to his departure. O’Neill says he is honoured to be back and is focused on getting Celtic back to winning games, while wishing Nancy well for the future.
O’Neill, who won seven trophies with Celtic between 2000 and 2005, will again work with assistants Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus. Celtic are currently second in the Scottish Premiership, six points behind Hearts and ahead of Rangers on goal difference.
During his earlier interim spell this season, O’Neill won all five league games and conceded just one goal. Club officials and principal shareholder Dermot Desmond say they trust his experience, strong track record and deep connection with Celtic to help steady the team and push for success in the rest of the season.
