Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, with Darren Fletcher set to take over temporarily for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley.
The decision came less than a day after Amorim criticised the club’s leadership following a 1-1 draw with Leeds. He suggested he was not being fully supported in the transfer market and said he wanted to work as a full manager rather than just a coach.
United confirmed Amorim’s departure, saying the club felt a change was needed to improve their Premier League finish, with the team currently sitting sixth. His coaching staff have also left the club.
Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and won 25 of his 63 matches in charge. His time at Old Trafford is the shortest spell by a permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes in 2014.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, now the club’s under-18s coach, will step in as interim boss. He is expected to speak to the media ahead of the Burnley game.
