Manchester United want to restart contract talks with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to give him a deal similar to other senior players. His current contract runs until 2027, with the option of a one-year extension.
So far, no new talks have taken place, and it is unclear if Mainoo is keen to sign a new deal. Last summer, he openly wanted to leave United on loan, which raised doubts about his future.
Former manager Ruben Amorim’s decision not to start Mainoo in the Premier League this season frustrated many United fans. At the start of January, the 20-year-old was again hoping to secure a loan move.
Since Amorim left, Mainoo has been brought back into the first team. Interim boss Darren Fletcher started him in the FA Cup loss to Brighton, and he also played in Michael Carrick’s first match in charge, a derby win over Manchester City.
Carrick praised Mainoo’s rapid rise, saying young players like him are vital to the club’s future and highlighting his strong character and ability to handle big matches at a young age.
Mainoo signed his last contract in 2023, and a new deal was expected after his goal in United’s 2024 FA Cup final win over City and his role in England’s Euro 2024 final. However, no agreement was reached, and his treatment under Amorim made his camp question how much United truly value him.
