Livramento injury adds to Newcastle’s defensive worries

0

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says the club’s defensive problems have worsened after Tino Livramento was ruled out for up to two months with a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old defender was forced off during Newcastle’s FA Cup win over Bournemouth, just weeks after returning from a knee injury. Howe said Livramento was “absolutely devastated” after working hard to get fit again, and the setback could affect his chances of playing for England in March.

Livramento’s injury leaves Newcastle short at the back, with Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth already sidelined. Howe admitted the defence is “really stretched” and hopes Burn can return soon to ease the situation.

Burn, who suffered a broken rib and punctured lung against Sunderland, could be back before the end of the month. Newcastle may also recall Matt Targett from his loan at Middlesbrough or look to the January transfer window for reinforcements.

With a busy run of matches coming up against Wolves, PSG, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham, Howe faces a major challenge managing Newcastle’s thin defensive options.
