Second-half goals from Khephren Thuram and Weston McKennie saw Juventus beat Benfica and secure progression in the Champions League, leaving Jose Mourinho’s side on the brink of elimination.
Thuram, son of 1998 World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a low strike after good work from Jonathan David. Nine minutes later, David set up McKennie for Juventus’ second goal.
Benfica had chances to respond, including a header from Fredrik Aursnes that hit the post. They were also awarded a penalty after Gleison Bremer fouled Leandro Barreiro, but Vangelis Pavlidis missed the spot-kick.
With one round left in the group stage, Juventus are 15th and guaranteed at least a two-legged play-off, though they still have a slim chance of finishing in the top eight to go straight into the last 16. Benfica, 29th, must beat Real Madrid at home to have any hope of reaching the play-offs.
