Pape Gueye scored twice as Senegal came from behind to beat Sudan 3-1 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), ending Sudan’s impressive run amid the country’s ongoing civil war.
Sudan took the lead early through Aamir Abdallah’s stunning curled shot, giving fans hope of a shock win. Senegal gradually took control, with Nicolas Jackson’s effort blocked before Gueye opened the scoring from 18 yards. He added a second just before halftime, side-footing past the goalkeeper.
Edouard Mendy made key saves to keep Senegal ahead, and in the 77th minute, Ibrahim Mbaye sealed the win. Senegal will stay in Tangier to face Mali in the quarter-finals next Friday, after Mali beat Tunisia on penalties.
