Britain’s Francesca Jones fought through injury and tough conditions to reach the Auckland Classic quarter-finals, saying she had “no idea what just happened” after her comeback win.
After beating world number 15 Emma Navarro in the first round, Jones struggled early against Austrian qualifier Sinja Kraus, losing the first set heavily and needing medical treatment twice. She looked uncomfortable and went a set and a break down.
However, the British number three showed great determination, winning 12 of the next 14 games to seal a 1-6 6-4 6-1victory.
Jones, who was once told she might never play professional tennis due to a rare genetic condition, battled the heat in Auckland and saved most of the break points she faced.
The win sends Jones into the quarter-finals, where she will face Wang Xinyu for a place in the last four.
