Manchester City took control of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle United with goals from new signing Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki.

Semenyo, who joined City from Bournemouth for £65m less than a week ago, opened the scoring after linking up with Bernardo Silva. He later had a goal ruled out by VAR. Substitute Cherki added a second in stoppage time, sealing a strong advantage for the first leg at St James’ Park.

Newcastle came close to scoring early, hitting the woodwork twice through Yoane Wissa and Bruno Guimaraes, but City’s defense held firm. The eight-time winners now head back to the Etihad with a commanding lead ahead of the return leg on 4 February.
