Australian Open changes Match schedule due to extreme heat

0

The Australian Open has changed its schedule again because of extreme heat, with temperatures expected to hit 42C in Melbourne.

The start of the wheelchair events, featuring British champions Alfie Hewett, Gordon Reid and Andy Lapthorne, has been pushed back to Wednesday. Junior matches on the outside courts will now start earlier at 09:00 local time to avoid the worst of the heat.

The singles quarter-finals, including world number ones Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, along with doubles matches, will be played on Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena, where roofs and air conditioning allow play to continue in cooler conditions.

A severe heat warning has been issued across Victoria, after matches were already suspended over the weekend as temperatures neared 40C.
