Arsenal’s semi-final record under Mikel Arteta has been poor in recent years, but their 3-2 win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup has given them real hope of finally changing that.
After failing to win a single leg in their last four two-legged semi-finals, Arsenal are now just one match away from reaching their first major final since winning the FA Cup in 2020. They will head into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium on 3 February as strong favourites.
The Gunners have been in excellent form this season, sitting top of both the Premier League and Champions League, while also reaching the FA Cup fourth round. Out of their 32 matches, they have only lost twice, both away games.
However, despite the positive result, there is a feeling the win could have been bigger. Arsenal had chances to score a fourth goal, which would have made the tie more comfortable before the second leg.
Arteta praised his players’ performance but admitted the late Chelsea goal kept the contest alive. While Arsenal are close to ending their semi-final struggles, there is still some frustration over missed opportunities as they chase a place in the EFL Cup final on 22 March.
