Alonso steps down as Real Madrid Manager

Xabi Alonso has left his role as Real Madrid manager after just eight months, with Alvaro Arbeloa named as his replacement.

The club said Alonso departed by mutual consent following recent poor results, including defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup. Real Madrid are also four points behind Barca in La Liga.

Former defender Alvaro Arbeloa, a Real Madrid legend and former Liverpool player, has been promoted from the club’s B team and will take charge immediately.

Alonso, who previously won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, won 24 of his 34 matches at the Bernabeu but faced criticism after a run of disappointing performances.

Arbeloa, who has coached in Real’s youth system since 2020, will make his senior managerial debut in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey match against Albacete.
