Barcelona stretched their lead over Real Madrid to four points at the top of La Liga with an exciting win over 10-man Villarreal. The visitors took the lead in the 12th minute when Raphinha scored from the penalty spot after being fouled by Santi Comesana.
Villarreal, who had won their last six league games, were reduced to 10 men in the 39th minute when Renato Veiga received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Lamine Yamal. Barcelona teenager Yamal effectively sealed the win in the 63rd minute, calmly finishing from close range after a scramble in the box.
Villarreal had early chances to take the lead, with Nicolas Pepe hitting the post and Ayoze Perez missing other opportunities, but Barcelona’s defense and goalkeeper Joan Garcia kept them out. Raphinha also nearly doubled the lead before half-time, striking the crossbar with a powerful effort.
The second half was calmer, with Barcelona controlling the game and Villarreal struggling to create chances. Yamal’s goal, his ninth of the season, put the result beyond doubt. Barcelona’s winning streak in La Liga now stands at eight games.
Barcelona return from the winter break to face Espanyol on 3 January, while Villarreal travel to Elche earlier that day.
