The Championship Should use VAR to make Matches Fairer Says Gerhard Struber

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber says the Championship should introduce VAR to make decisions “more fair.” His comments came after Bristol City had a late equaliser ruled out for offside in their 1-0 loss to Millwall, which sparked a big post-match clash between players and staff.

Struber says he’s “not a fan of VAR,” but believes it produces better and fairer decisions. VAR is already used in the Premier League, as well as major leagues like the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1, while the Championship only uses it in the play-off finals.

He argues that the high pace and pressure of Championship football makes it hard for referees, and that such a “dynamic and exciting league” deserves VAR, especially as lower leagues in other countries already use it.

Bristol City now face Leicester on Wednesday before taking on leaders Coventry on Saturday. Struber says Leicester have top players like Jannick Vestergaard, but believes his squad has the energy and quality to compete.
