Paris Saint-Germain have been told by a French court to pay Kylian Mbappé €60 million after failing to pay him some of his salary and bonuses before he left the club.
Mbappé had originally asked for much more money, saying PSG owed him unpaid wages and treated him unfairly during a long contract dispute. PSG, in return, tried to sue Mbappé, blaming him for financial losses after he chose not to renew his contract or move to Saudi Arabia.
The disagreement began when Mbappé decided not to extend his contract. PSG left him out of their pre-season tour and their first game of the 2023-24 season, which Mbappé believed was punishment. PSG later brought him back into the team, saying he had agreed to give up some payments — a claim Mbappé’s lawyers denied.
The court ruled that PSG had failed to pay Mbappé three months’ wages, along with a signing bonus and an ethics bonus. However, it rejected his much larger claim and only awarded part of the money he asked for.
Mbappé’s lawyer said the decision was fair and showed that football clubs must still follow employment laws. PSG had also tried to claim compensation after Mbappé turned down a huge move to Saudi club Al-Hilal, but that argument failed.
Mbappé left PSG in 2024 after seven years at the club, where he became their all-time top scorer, and later joined Real Madrid on a free transfer.
