Few coaches have shaped modern football like Pep Guardiola, and his influence can be seen in managers across Europe, including Enzo Maresca and Brian Barry-Murphy.
Two of Guardiola’s protégés will come face to face when Chelsea play Cardiff City in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Tuesday. Maresca is now Chelsea boss, while Barry-Murphy is head coach of League One leaders Cardiff.
The pair previously worked together at Manchester City, with Barry-Murphy replacing Maresca as boss of City’s Elite Development Squad before Maresca returned as Guardiola’s first-team assistant. Their paths crossed again at Leicester City, where Maresca led the club to Premier League promotion before later moving to Chelsea.
Maresca, despite a difficult few days off the pitch, praised Barry-Murphy for the job he is doing at Cardiff, calling the match a dangerous and tricky game. He warned Chelsea must stay focused if they want to reach another semi-finalunder his leadership.
Barry-Murphy also spoke highly of Maresca, calling him a top-class coach and admitting their friendship will be put aside once the match begins. He stressed that Cardiff, with their large fanbase and strong form, will look to compete and excite supporters.
Both managers share a Guardiola-style philosophy, preferring attacking football, possession, and control of games. The key difference is squad depth, with Chelsea boasting stars and recent trophies, while Cardiff are in the third tier but thriving.
Maresca plans to rotate his squad, though Chelsea remain favourites. However, he admitted these are the games where upsets can happen.
For Cardiff, there is little pressure. Top of League One, playing attractive football with young local players, they see the tie as an opportunity rather than a fear. Barry-Murphy believes his squad will play with confidence and no fear, regardless of the outcome.
