Nigeria reach AFCON last 16 after holding off Tunisia comeback

0

Nigeria held off a late Tunisia fightback to reach the AFCON last 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Super Eagles looked comfortable after going 3-0 up in their Group C clash in Fes, with goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman. However, Tunisia rallied late on.

Montassar Talbi headed in from a Hannibal Mejbri free-kick to pull one back, before Tunisia were awarded a late penalty after a VAR review for a handball by Bright Osayi-Samuel. Ali Abdi converted to make it 3-2 and set up a tense finish.

Tunisia pushed for an equaliser, with Ferjani Sassi and Ismael Gharbi going close, but Nigeria held firm.

The win takes Nigeria to six points, guaranteeing them top spot in Group C and a place in the last 16 with a game to spare. Tunisia remain on three points, while Uganda and Tanzania sit on one point each.
