Thomas Mueller says his past wins over Lionel Messi won’t matter when his team, the Vancouver Whitecaps, face Inter Miami in the MLS Cup final on Saturday.
Mueller, who moved to Vancouver from Bayern Munich in August, has beaten Messi several times in the past for both club and country including the 2014 World Cup final. But he says none of that helps now.
He explained that although those old games were great memories, they don’t influence what will happen this weekend. Every match is new, and confidence has to come from the team’s current performance, not old results.
Mueller also said Vancouver’s two wins against Miami earlier this year don’t guarantee anything either. He believes the final will be decided by how both teams play on the day.
His past victories over Messi like Bayern’s famous 8-2 win over Barcelona in 2020 are just history now. For Mueller, what matters is what happens on Saturday.
