Liverpool legend Michael Owen has called out Mohamed Salah for publicly criticising manager Arne Slot, adding more tension at Anfield just a week before the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah’s unusual outburst came after he was benched for the third Premier League match in a row, including the dramatic 3–3 draw with Leeds, where Liverpool blew a two-goal lead.
The Egyptian star — who was crucial in last season’s title win — said he felt the club was “throwing him under the bus” as his relationship with Slot worsened.
“They’re throwing me under the bus,” Salah said. “Suddenly we have no relationship. I don’t know why. It’s not acceptable.”
The 32-year-old added that he was told in advance he wouldn’t start again, and hinted that the upcoming match against Brighton could be his last at Anfield before leaving for AFCON — comments that have sparked rumours about his long-term future.
Reacting to the outburst, Owen criticised Salah, urging him to stay calm at such a sensitive time for the club.
“Oh @mosalah… I get how you feel,” Owen wrote. “You’ve carried this team for years and won everything. But you can’t say that publicly. You’re going to AFCON in a week — just hold it in, represent your country, and reassess things when you return.”
