Manchester City reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals after beating Brentford, helped by a stunning long-range goal from Rayan Cherki.
Brentford began the match well but failed to make their chances count and were denied by a strong performance from their stand-in goalkeeper, Hakon Valdimarsson. City took the lead just after half an hour when Cherki cut inside and fired a powerful shot into the top corner.
Brentford were frustrated before the goal when they felt Abdukodir Khusanov should have been sent off for fouling Kevin Schade as he ran towards goal, but only a yellow card was shown, with no VAR in use.
In the second half, both teams created chances, but City doubled their lead when Savinho’s shot took a deflection and looped over the goalkeeper.
The win sends Manchester City into the last four of the competition, keeping them on course for another trip to Wembley.
