Macclesfield forward Ethan McLeod has died at the age of 21 after being involved in a car accident on the M1 motorway.
McLeod was travelling home from Macclesfield’s National League North match against Bedford Town on Tuesday night, where he had come on as a substitute. The crash happened at around 10:40pm near Northampton when his car hit a barrier.
Macclesfield described McLeod as a talented player and a well-respected member of the squad. In a statement, the club said they were devastated by the news and expressed deep sadness at his passing.
McLeod spent 10 years in the academy at Wolverhampton Wanderers as a youngster. He played for Wolves’ under-21 side in the EFL Trophy but did not make a first-team appearance.
After leaving Wolves, the Birmingham-born player had spells with Alvechurch, Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge before joining Macclesfield in the summer following a successful trial.
He made five appearances for Macclesfield and scored twice, with his most recent goal coming in a 1-1 draw against King’s Lynn Town on 10 December.
