Maccabi Tel Aviv Handed Suspended One-game Ban on away Fans

Maccabi Tel Aviv have received a suspended one-match away fan ban from UEFA following “racist and/or discriminatory behavior” by their supporters during last week’s Europa League match against Stuttgart in Germany.

The Israeli club were also fined €20,000 (£17,550) over the incident, which occurred during the fixture on 11 December. Stuttgart went on to win the match 4-1.

Uefa’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body confirmed that the sanction banning Maccabi from selling tickets to away supporters for their next Uefa away match has been suspended for a probationary period of two years.

The ruling comes after Maccabi fans were previously barred from attending an away Europa League game at Aston Villa in November due to safety concerns. That decision proved controversial, drawing criticism from politicians including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who described the move as “wrong” and said the UK would “not tolerate antisemitism on our streets”.

West Midlands Police later gave evidence to the Home Affairs Committee on 1 December, while committee chair Karen Bradley has since requested further details from police and Birmingham City Council regarding the decision to prevent Maccabi supporters from travelling.

The defeat in Stuttgart left Maccabi Tel Aviv with just one point from six matches in the Europa League league phase.
