Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says the team is “absolutely united and going forward as one” after Mohamed Salah’s return in Saturday’s win over Brighton.
Salah came on as a substitute and set up a goal in the 2-0 victory, his first appearance since saying he felt “thrown under the bus” after the draw with Leeds. He had been left out of the squad for the Champions League win at Inter Milan, but returned after talks with manager Arne Slot.
Salah will now leave to join Egypt for Afcon, meaning he could miss up to eight Liverpool matches. Van Dijk said the squad hopes Salah does well and comes back to play an important role for the rest of the season, while admitting football situations can change quickly.
Van Dijk also praised Arne Slot for handling the situation calmly, saying Liverpool have stayed together despite outside pressure and mixed form. He added that the club, players, and fans must stick together in both good and difficult moments, as Liverpool continue their unbeaten run of five games.
