Chelsea held off League One leaders Cardiff City to reach the EFL Cup semi-finals after a hard-fought win in south Wales.
Backed by a loud capacity crowd at Cardiff City Stadium, the home side impressed in the first half, defending well and causing problems, with the game remaining goalless at the break.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made 11 changes from the team that beat Everton in the Premier League. Unhappy with his side’s flat first-half display, he made changes at half-time, and substitute Alejandro Garnacho made an immediate impact, scoring after a Cardiff defensive error.
Cardiff responded positively and equalised when David Turnbull headed in from a Perry Ng cross, sending the home fans into celebration. But Chelsea quickly regained control as another substitute, Pedro Neto, scored with a low shot that took a deflection.
Garnacho then scored his second goal in added time to seal the win and send Chelsea into the EFL Cup semi-finals.
Despite the defeat, Cardiff City can take confidence from pushing Premier League opposition, while Chelsea will be relieved to progress after a challenging few days for Maresca. The semi-final draw takes place on Wednesday.
