Hugh Morris, a former England and Glamorgan batter and ex-England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive, has died aged 62.

He was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2022. Although he returned to work later that year, he stepped down as Glamorgan chief executive in September 2023 to focus on treatment and spend time with his family.

Morris was a successful opening batter. He captained Glamorgan twice and led the county to the Sunday League title in 1993. He also played three full matches for England and captained England A on tours of South Africa, the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

After retiring from playing, the Welshman spent 16 years in senior roles at the ECB. As chief executive, he oversaw a very successful era for the England men’s Test team, including three straight Ashes series wins.

He later returned to Wales as Glamorgan’s chief executive, spending nine years at his home county. During that time, he helped cut debts and made sure Sophia Gardens became the home of a Hundred team, with Welsh Fire based in Cardiff.

Morris was also a patron of Heads Up, a charity that supports research into head and neck cancer. He had survived throat cancer diagnosed in 2002, which was not linked to his 2022 illness.

In recognition of his work in cricket and charity, Morris was appointed MBE in 2022 and was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in September 2024.
