Fiorentina say they have put extra security measures in place to protect their players, staff and their families after receiving what the club called “unacceptable and shameful” threats.
The threats came after Fiorentina’s 3–1 defeat to Sassuolo on Saturday, a result that left the winless team bottom of Serie A after 14 matches.
In a statement, the club condemned the threats and said it stands fully behind the players and their families.
It added that this kind of behaviour has no place in football or society, and that the club contacted its players and the authorities straight away to make sure all necessary safety steps were taken.
Fiorentina also thanked the many supporters who have shown their support, and repeated that there is no room for intimidation, hatred or violence.The club said its commitment to protecting players and their families remains firm.
The situation escalated after the wife of defender Dodô shared death threats aimed at her and her family on social media.
The team’s poor start this season is a big change from last year, when Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A.
