Cameroon start their AFCON campaign with a win thanks to an Etta Eyong goal

Karl Etta Eyong’s early goal gave five-time champions Cameroon a 1-0 win over Gabon in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group F opener in Agadir.

Cameroon started the match strongly and were rewarded when Bryan Mbeumo set up Eyong, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper. The goal was checked by VAR and allowed to stand.

Gabon tried to respond and made changes before half-time, including bringing on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had been expected to miss the game through injury. Despite creating a few chances, Gabon were unable to find an equaliser.

Cameroon nearly scored again late on but hit the crossbar. The win gives Cameroon a positive start to their AFCON campaign ahead of a big clash with Ivory Coast, while Gabon will face Mozambique next.
