Real Madrid ended their three-game streak without a win by comfortably beating Athletic Club, moving them to within one point of league leaders Barcelona. But the victory came with a downside as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Eduardo Camavinga both picked up injuries.
Kylian Mbappé scored twice and set up another, putting Madrid in full control by half-time. Alexander-Arnold, who has only recently returned from a hamstring injury, assisted Mbappé’s opener before going off with what looked like another leg problem.
Mbappé’s first goal came after he controlled a long pass from Alexander-Arnold, dribbled past two defenders, and finished brilliantly. He then headed the ball across goal for Camavinga to score the second. Mbappé added his second of the night just before the hour mark.
While the win helps Real stay close to Barcelona after a poor run of draws, the injuries to Alexander-Arnold and Camavinga took some shine off the result. Athletic Club’s struggles continued, with this being their seventh loss in 12 league matches.
