AFCON will switch to a four-year cycle from 2028, CAF president Patrice Motsepe has announced. The tournament, held every two years since 1968, will now follow the same year as the European Championships.
Motsepe also revealed an annual African Nations League starting in 2029 and increased the AFCON prize money for winners from $7m to $10m.
The change aims to better align with the global football calendar, reduce clashes with European club seasons, and maintain revenue for African football development. The 2027 edition in East Africa will be followed immediately by a 2028 tournament before the four-year cycle begins.
