Wiegman defends England friendlies in Spain after low crowd

Sarina Wiegman has defended England's two friendlies in Spain after their 7-2 victory over Austria on Friday was played in front of less than 1,000 fans.

The Lionesses recorded a big victory at the Estadio Nuevo Mirador and will face Italy there on Tuesday night.

England played in front of 71,632 at Wembley in December but, according to the Telegraph, only 949 tickets were sold for their fixture against Austria.

"It's [about] finding balance," said Wiegman. "We wanted to play good friendlies in very good circumstances. We have very good pitches here, the weather is also that we can have good training sessions.

"We did know there would probably not be as many fans here as we had hoped. There were fans on Friday and they enjoyed it. I hope the fans at home that watched the game enjoyed it too.

"We'll be back in England for games in April, June, July and the rest of the season we'll be playing a lot in England. I hope that connects with the fans enough."
