Qatar 2022: Michael Owen blasts ‘idiotic’ France star as Argentina win World Cup

Former Manchester United striker, Michael Owen has blasted France forward, Ousmane Dembele for the ‘idiotic’ challenge that led to Argentina’s early penalty during both teams’ 2022 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.

Owen, a former England international, disclosed this in a tweet via his Twitter handle.

He tweeted, “Putting aside his idiotic challenge for the penalty, Dembele has given it away virtually every time he’s touched it. Argentina playing very well here.”

France started in sluggish fashion against Argentina in the World Cup final, with Lionel Messi dictating the tempo and Julian Alvarez pressing relentlessly from the front.

During the encounter, Di Maria tricked his way into the penalty area in the 23rd minute, having easily outfoxed Dembele.

Dembele panicked and although he only made minimal contact with Di Maria, his contact was enough to send the Juventus star sprawling and convince referee Szymon Marciniak to point to the spot.

Messi then converted the spot-kick, and Argentina eventually ended up winning the World Cup final match.

It ended in a 4-2 penalty win following a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes.
