AFCON 2021: I’m not happy with you – Geremi Njitap hits out at Jurgen Klopp over comment

Former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Cameroon midfielder, Geremi Njitap has hit out at Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp over his comment about the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

Klopp had in November, while talking about the lack of international breaks for his players from then until March, told the press that there was a ‘little tournament in Africa’ coming up in January.

In another press conference, the Liverpool boss said he was quoted out of context, insisting he did not mean it the way it was understood.

However, Geremi has refused to forgive the German and has explained just how important AFCON is to him and Africans.

“When Jurgen Klopp described the Africa Cup of Nations as a ‘little tournament’ I was far from impressed,’ Geremi wrote for the Daily Mail.

“A lot of fans from outside of Africa may not know but in my view, AFCON is the third most important football tournament on the planet and it means so much to anyone competing on this stage.

“I am unhappy about Klopp’s remarks, to say the least, and think it’s a big shame that the Liverpool manager has not respected the competition.”

This edition of the binary tournament is being hosted in Geremi’s country, Cameroon and the former Chelsea star won the competition twice during his illustrious career.

Meanwhile, Klopp has lost three of his top players at Liverpool: Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita to AFCON this year.
