Conte can’t change things at Tottenham, Harry Kane may dump club – Paul Merson

Former Arsenal star, Paul Merson, has warned new Tottenham Hotspur manager, Antonio Conte, that he has ‘no chance’ of taking the club back into the Premier League top-four this season.

Merson also warned that Tottenham striker, Harry Kane, will ‘walk away’ if they miss out from the Champions League football for another season.

According to him, Conte was appointed by Tottenham to get them back into the Champions League spot, but the Italian doesn’t have the players to do so.

Tottenham were a regular in Europe’s top competition under Mauricio Pochettino, who is now the current manager of PSG.

Spurs even reached the Champions League final in 2019, when they lost to Premier League rivals, Liverpool.

But they have slipped out of the Champions League this season and have found themselves playing in the UEFA Europa League.

“Antonio Conte has gone to Tottenham to get them into the top four, but he doesn’t have the players to do it,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“This is not Chelsea where he had ready-made wing backs, top-quality forwards and a deep squad with a history of winning things.

“This is Spurs. Conte makes them better. He’s one of the best managers in the world. But he’s not a miracle worker.

“I don’t think he will get them into the Champions League. No chance. And if he gets to spend some money but finishes fifth or sixth, it’s a waste of an appointment, really.”

He added, “Conte has signed for 18 months, but they will be back to square one if he’s walked away by then. If they don’t finish in the top four, Harry Kane will be out of there too.”
