Ticket prices for Friday’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final in Los Angeles have fallen sharply following the elimination of hosts the United States and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal from the tournament.
According to Forbes, the cheapest resale tickets for the match dropped by nearly 60 per cent, falling from $2,950 to around $1,200 on secondary ticket marketplace TickPick after Monday’s Round of 16 fixtures.
The decline came after the United States suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, ending hopes of a home-team appearance in the quarter-finals. Portugal also bowed out following a 1-0 loss to Spain, bringing Ronaldo’s World Cup career to an end and removing one of the tournament’s biggest attractions.
Forbes noted that the absence of both the host nation and Ronaldo significantly reduced demand for the Los Angeles fixture, which was expected to attract far greater interest had either team progressed.
The report also cited ticket marketplace SeatPick, which revealed that average resale prices for all World Cup quarter-final matches have dropped by 31.5 per cent over the past day and by more than 50 per cent over the last three days, reflecting a sharp decline in demand following the high-profile exits.
