Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn endured a difficult debut for San Jose Earthquakes as they suffered a 4-0 home defeat to Orlando City in their first Major League Soccer match following the World Cup break.
The 30-year-old was making his first appearance since Scotland's 3-0 defeat to Brazil ended their FIFA World Cup campaign at the group stage. It was also his first club outing since coming off the bench for Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 Premier League draw against Crystal Palace in February.
Despite the heavy scoreline, Gunn was largely blameless for the goals and made several important saves to prevent an even bigger defeat for Bruce Arena's side.
Orlando took the lead after just seven minutes when defender David Brekalo was left unmarked to head home an Eduard Atuesta free-kick.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 29th minute as winger Ivan Angulo rifled a powerful low strike into the far corner from outside the penalty area.
French star Antoine Griezmann marked his Orlando City debut in style following his move from Atletico Madrid. The 35-year-old forward capitalised on a San Jose turnover to fire home from inside the box three minutes after the restart, leaving Gunn with little chance.
Paraguayan midfielder Braian Ojeda completed the scoring in the 73rd minute, directing another Atuesta set-piece past Gunn at the near post.
At the opposite end, Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau also impressed, producing several excellent saves, including two to deny Germany striker Timo Werner a dream debut for San Jose following his move from RB Leipzig.
Despite the defeat, San Jose remain level on points at the top of the MLS Western Conference but sit second on goal difference behind Vancouver Whitecaps, who have a game in hand. The Earthquakes are fourth in the overall league standings, with Nashville leading the Supporters' Shield race ahead of Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.
Gunn and San Jose will look to bounce back when they host LA Galaxy in their next MLS fixture on Sunday.
