The 30-year-old Spain captain inspired his country to FIFA World Cup glory last week and was named the tournament's Golden Ball winner after a series of outstanding performances.
However, Rodri's club career has been hampered by injuries over the past two seasons. An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury ruled him out for much of the 2024-25 campaign, while several fitness setbacks last season also limited his availability.
Despite returning to top form at the World Cup, the Ballon d'Or winner will now undergo surgery before beginning a period of rehabilitation.
"Now, he has surgery on Monday. Then he needs a holiday, he needs to rest and recover, and then he will be back with us," Maresca said during his first press conference since taking charge of Manchester City.
The Italian did not provide a timeline for Rodri's return but dismissed speculation linking the midfielder with a move to Real Madrid.
"With top players, there are always rumours, so I'm not worried about that," Maresca said.
"It's normal, especially after Spain won the World Cup and because he's one of the best players in the world. Every manager would want Rodri because he's a top player."
Speaking about City's other players yet to rejoin the squad following their summer commitments, Maresca said he expects them to return three or four days before the Community Shield against Premier League champions Arsenal on Sunday, 16 August.
